Post-Prohibition era, society was more than ready to enjoy a drink or two in plain view, thus marked the period of the bar cart. The bar cart has returned for a 2012 homecoming, just in time for the holiday season. As an apartment dweller in the heart of Los Angeles, I’m pressed for space and have become somewhat of a penny pincher, a careful fashionista if you will. The bar cart is the idyllic, sophisticated method to entertain in small quarters. Show off your “crystal” stemware and two-buck Chuck with utmost pride on a store bought or up-cycled trolley cart.
Not a drinker? Not a problem. Use your bar cart to mix mock-tails for a holiday party, to holster books kitschy miscellaneous items and vases, or as a kitchen island when you’re cooking for groups. In my opinion the best bar carts don’t have to house a stiff drink, but rather make a statement either in color, structure or detail.
Come with me as I channel my inner Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant…
I’ve scoured Pinterest, my favorite blogs and online stores to find the best of the best. Unfortunately, bar carts purchased online through a store can be pricey. If you have the extra cash and extra space I’d recommend this Loft Bar Cart (above left) by Wayfair.com. This stunning Restoration Hardware 1950s Milo Bar Cart (above) has a price tag, but I love the mirrored glass and sleek lines, which give a modern finish to old world glam.
As much as I love nice things, I love up-cycling and DIY even more. There aren’t many bloggers who do at home DIY better than sisters Elsie and Emma of A Beautiful Mess. On a recent blog post, Elsie found a sorry looking, industrial cart at bargain price and truly transformed it into a homey, useful cocktail station. You don’t have to buy everything new; I love the way she incorporated recycled fruit crates, mason jars, and local flowers as accent pieces (above). Check out her DIY project here atwww.abeautifulmess.com. Find your cart at the flea market, eBay or discount store. Don’t be scared to add some elbow grease.
